Industry:  Steel – Founder of Carnegie Steel Company

 

Philanthropy:

  • Paid for the expansion of the New York Public Library

  • Established the Carnegie Institute of Technology, now known as Carnegie-Mellon University

 

Fast Facts:

  • In 1889, Carnegie Steel Company was the largest steel company in the world

  • Carnegie developed technology to make the manufacture of steel faster,easier and more productive

  • He sold Carnegie Steel Company to United States Steel Corporation in 1901.

  • Some consider him a “Robber Baron” because his great wealth came at the expense of his workers

  • Gave away $350 million to charity
